Mires is a fairly large and important market town and lies on the main road from Heraklion to Tymbaki. It is a focal point for the bus service where you change from one route to another either to some of the towns along the south coast or to Rythynmon or Chania areas in the north.

There are some facilities like banks, travel agents and some speciality shops along with an array of tavernas and bars along the ‘high street’.

On Saturday, the open air market or Bazaar comes to town and people from the surrounding farms and smallholdings set up stalls to sell their produce – oranges, tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, trees, plants, honey, cheese, animals and birds. The other section of the market offers a multitude of articles including clothes, shoes, hardware and toys. Prices are very reasonable and happy people are seen wandering back home laden with goodies they have bought.

Mires has it’s own Hospital and Health Centre, although for any serious accident or illness, patients will be taken to the state-of-the-art Hospital in Heraklion.
